It's inevitable that billable events are going to be missed, and cumulatively those snippets of time mount up to a significant billing opportunity.

Cooper & Scully, P.C. is a sixty-attorney law firm known for its vast experience in trial and appellate work. The firm recently implemented Airtime for Professionals (A4P) to reduce "billable hour leakage" resulting from forgotten wireless calls and emails. "Our lawyers are always busy, always moving, juggling multiple activities relating to a variety of cases," says Tim Dasch, Director of IT for the firm. "It's inevitable that billable events are going to be missed, and cumulatively those snippets of time mount up to a significant billing opportunity."
It's not just about capturing calls and emails: these also serve as reminders that can lead to adjacent billable events. "If an attorney takes a call or email, it's also likely that he cracked open a file and did some additional work on the matter. In this case, tracking the call acts as a reminder, and can result in the recovery of other billable time. For this reason, our policy is to record as many of these events as possible, even if they are quite short."
Now, in addition to automatically capturing billable events, our attorneys can enter time, any time, any where, and have it show up in their calendar for final review and approval.
The firm utilizes Carpe Diem for time management, a platform with which A4P is seamlessly integrated. "Now, in addition to automatically capturing billable events, our attorneys can enter time, any time, any where, and have it show up in their calendar for final review and approval."
Cooper & Scully is fully committed to Windows Mobile, as Dasch feels it gives the firm tremendous flexibility in what devices their attorneys can choose. Many use Pocket PCs, some use Windows Mobile Treos, and others still prefer the BlackJack. Since A4P runs on both Pocket PCs and Smartphones, Dasch plans to make A4P available to any attorney who might benefit.
For a busy IT Director, a simple product that's both easy to install and well supported is critically important. Dasch describes the product as "straightforward," the installation process as "fluid" and gives high marks to the support he's received. "The Carpe Diem interface was configured before my eyes in just one web session. Our installation required some tweaking, and Airtime was very, very accommodating in going the extra mile. When they were done, it all worked, and there is next to zero administration required to maintain and add to the system."
While ease of use is essential, ultimately a firm implements a new solution because there is a compelling financial reason to do so. When Dasch first introduced A4P to the firm, one of the senior partners remarked "You mean I only have to capture one event to pay for this thing?" With some users averaging more than one event per day, A4P is certainly earning it's keep.
